Personal Training – Is it Value for Money?

Once only a luxury enjoyed by celebrities and the ultra-rich, personal training is now something which is within the realms of many.  But what do you actually get out of it?  Are personal trainers worth the money, or are you better off keeping the dollars in your wallet?

Well, if you look at any top athletes, be they swimmers, sprinters, weight lifters or any other kind of sports people, it’s rare to see anyone without a coach of some description.  And what is a coach if not a personal trainer?

No matter how much knowledge you have, it can never hurt to have another pair of eyes which will, by default, look at your training from a different perspective.  And no matter how motivated you may be, we all have off days.

So rather than asking the question – personal training, is it worth it?  The question should really be, personal question when is it worth it?

Okay then, when are personal trainers worth the money?

This is a little more difficult to answer.  You need to take a long hard look at yourself, and be honest in your own appraisal.  Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Do I have the necessary knowledge to set myself a personal training program?
  2. Have I reached a plateau in my training?
  3. Do I have the motivation to stick to my program?

If you answered no to number one, then you should definitely seek advice.  Whether this is from a personal trainer or another source it doesn’t matter.  One way or another you need to set out a realistic program to lead you towards your goals.

Answered yes to number two?  Then a personal trainer could well be a good option.  At the very least you need to seek out advice from someone knowledgable.

If you answer no to question three, then you are the most likely to reap the benefits of personal training.  Having someone there to give you the kick up the proverbial can be exactly the motivation you need to reach your targets.

It’s not necessary to have a personal trainer with you every time you work out.  Perhaps you could benefit from a session once a month, or once every six weeks.  It really is a matter of personal preference.

Choosing the Right Personal Trainer

If you’ve decided to take advantage of a personal training program, it’s imperative that you choose the right trainer.  There’s hundreds out there all wanting to get their hands on your hard-earned dollars, but it’s very much a case of buyer beware.

The following are tips on how to find out which personal trainers are worth the money:

  • Word of mouth.  Recommendations from multiple sources are the very best way of finding personal trainers worth the money
  • Find out the trainers specialty.  Is it general fitness, fat loss, bodybuilding, endurance training?  You want to be working with someone who has your exact goals in mind.
  • Look at the trainer.  If your goal is to get ripped, bulk up or whatever, then the last thing you want is to be taking advice from someone who obviously doesn’t practice what they preach.

And finally – remember that you’re the customer.  Any personal trainer should be completely focused during your sessions, know exactly what was worked on in previous sessions and regularly change your workouts.  They should be able to professionally answer any of your questions to your satisfaction.  If they can’t do this, then it’s time to look for another trainer!
